Church security

At the weekend a reader e-mailed me about hightened security at St. Mary's Church.

"We were not allowed to park next to the church, and we had to be screened by guards with metal detectors (a la airport security)."

I'd seen nothing in the papers then, but yesterday there was a report in Gulf News about it.

Police are saying it's a 'routine security measure' and 'there is nothing to worry about' and I suppose it just could be, with Easter coming up.

It could also, of course, be that the authorities have received some intelligence that something untoward is planned.

One to watch.

Gulf News report is here.

If a Martian landed at St Mary's, could he tell the difference between security measures for Christians at Easter and harassment of non-Muslims?

I was in London during the IRA's bombing campaign. People going into clubs were stopped and frisked - no-one thought of it as harassment of club-goers.

As long as all those spooks know their job and ensure safety of the congregation is what counts. Even if it means being frisked or made to park a mile away from the church.

Personally, I don't like it but hey, anything for a trouble-free service in this under-the-wrap state of jitter!
