I saw a department store (in australia) putting together its christmas display in september (that's right, a full 1/4 of the year before christmas)

We saw the same thing towards the end of September in the UK too Sam. But at least they're (nominally) Christian countries.

Are Christmas decoration stigmatic over there?

"stigmatic" LDU?
The shopping malls and even some local shopping street shops are a mass of Christmas decorations and window displays in December. I'll dig out some photos of last year and post them...

Home Centre had Christmas stuff in August which is definitely a record for me! I bought some of it mainly to prove to "other arf" who would never have believed me otherwise! Bloody waste of money as I'm bound to have lost it before Christmas!

Hey you guys in Dubai. At least you get Christmas! Here in Saudi, there are 2 shops I know of that have decorations available but not on display. The lead up to Christmas is terribly depressing. The compound looks fabulous but there is absolutely no joy whatsoever in Christmas shopping, no carols, no decorations, no nothing...although that is vaguely reminiscent of the 'nothing' that exists for the entire rest of the year too!!
