Strong light

It would have been much worse if the street light hadn't been as strong. It stopped the van from crossing the kerb and causing a head-on crash.

It's a sixty kph zone by the way, but as it's the usual Dubai dual-carriageway, two lanes either side, it's treated like a freeway.

Much worse? It looks bad enough already, with two ambulances on the scene! Catch fire: I may be wrong, but I generally notice that unless the speed is absurdly high, it is comparatively rare for Japanese cars to catch fire. I may be wrong, but that's what I generally notice.

Hemlock - probably because the engine wasn't damaged as it's under the front seats. It is amazing how many cars DO catch fire in the UAE when they are in accidents.

No doubt it was the workers in the back, packed in like sardines, that were hurt the most.

Shankie, there were two ambulances but no-one was dashing around and there was no-one on the ground so hopefully the injuries weren't bad. But I said it would have been worse if the van had missed the street light because it would have been in a head-on collision with vehicles coming in the opposite direction. Even if they were travelling at, for the area, a modest 80kph that's an impact of 160kph and there would have been more and far more serious.

Vehicle fires is something I've posted about a lot. As NZM commented, there are an unusually high number of vehicle fires here, and many of them involve Japanese brands.

Seabee, you have no idea, do you, what it's like to be in this situation being carried off in a stretcher. Thank God for the strong lampost indeed.

Just upon your site as I have been looking for some expat Dubai blogs...as for this accident, the ones in Kuwait are far worse...I have seen nothing here that resembles the one in Kuwait by any means. Scary!
