Bomb 'joker' gets jail

A follow-up to last Thursday's post about the Brit who thought it was a good joke to pretend to set off a bomb on an Emirates flight into Dubai. He'll have four months in the slammer to rethink his idea of humour.

Good.

The mysterious part of the sentence to me is that he was also fined Dh1,000 for consuming alcohol.

I've never understood the law on alcohol. It's freely available yet it's an offence to drink it.

Under this inexplicable thinking surely Emirates should be charged with aiding and abetting. They served him, as they serve their other passengers, with free alcohol, they pour it for them, they offer them more. Presumably with full knowledge that it's an offence for the passengers to drink it.

You can read Gulf News' report here.

I'll tell you what Seabee, I think he got away very lightly. I don't think 4 months for the idiot is enough. Me, I'd have thrown the key away - maybe a bit harsh but I certainly believe that 4 months was too lenient.

Billy I agree with you, I'd have given him a much longer period to reflect on his stupidity.

Possibly bad reporting: 'consuming alcohol' is not an offence for someone who's allowed to do so (non-Muslim, bona fide traveller or holder of a Booze Licence). Being drunk in public is an offence though.

It's always desribed as 'consuming alcohol' Keefie, never as 'drunk', so I assume that's the translation of the charge.
