Another ridiculous sentence

Soup up the engines of your 4x4s, race each other at 130kph in a 60kph residential area, kill an innocent driver unlucky enough to be on the same street.

That's what two drivers did in Al Khawaneej.

They deserve the full weight of the law.

What did they get? Three months jail and licences suspended for one year.

There was also the usual diyya of Dh200,000 but that's the same as an insurance payout and it's hardly a punishment for acting with such utter disregard for other people's lives.

Why such a risible sentence?

Because they're students and judgement was 'in consideration of their young age and their studies' apparently.

One is 18, the other 19. They're old enough to drive, old enough to have licences, old enough to have 4X4s, old enough to kill someone through their criminal actions...but not old enough to be held truly accountable.

There needs to be some serious thought given to a justice system that gives one month for kissing and three months for killing.

Prosecution has fifteen days to appeal the sentence. I sincerely hope they do.

Khaleej Times has the story here.

The teenage drivers must be having a laugh. I hardly doubt if this punishment would teach them anything. I have to agree, its too lenient and it is not the matter of them being a student or a teenager, they are grown up enough to understand the situation. Where are the parents of these boys?

There's a similar sad story in the Canadian news this morning. Two guys street racing, 3 deaths ensued, including one of the racers. The sentence? 3 years in jail and a 10 year driving ban.

BLAH BLAH BLAH.

They arent of LEGAL age. The legal age to be legally accountable in the UAE is 21. That is the law. So yes, much like Americans who at 18 can drive and DIE for their country but CANT drink, is this case, where you are allowed to do alot but still arent of legal age and thus also cant do alot.

I agree with the 1st poster, as these two are legally MINORS their parents should also be held accountable. That is after all what being a minor is, not being legally liable BUT having a legal guardian.

The Canadian story isnt the same, those people are LEGAL ADULTS, 41 and 31 years old.

a 19 year old doing this, and say... me doing this, are 2 very different things.

There needs to be some serious thought given to a justice system that gives one month for kissing and three months for killing.

That isnt your call to make or even suggest. When you hold a UAE passport and nationality, you will have the right to say that.

Also, your use of the word KILLING is a bit off. This was a case of MANSLAUGHTER, a death without INTENT. Murder is a death WITH intent. Two very different things, even in the west.

Ultra blue, you are a vile creature.

What If it was your father/brother who had been killed by them would you still be defending them.

I'll give you more definitions - reckless means without thought or care for the consequences of an action when the person knows the action is dangerous or illegal.

Ie they are are culpable, they may not have intended to kill but would have been aware that their reckless behaviour could cause injury or death - but they did not care about that.

Killing merley means to cause the death of something - it implies no intent.

Murder and manslaughter are both forms of killing.
So it is not a "bit off" as you put it so tritely - someone lost their life and family and friends needlessly lost a loved one because of these arrogant little shits - they should be banged up for a long, long time.

Ultrablue is what is known in the internet world as a 'flamer'. He is not by any accord an Emirati. Most probably an Indian teaboy at best pretending to be Arab so he can keep his job and stay in the country. He seems to kiss ass of the UAE each time and everytime regardless of what sh@@ they do. Also known as brown tonguing in the western world.

As far as the passport and nationality scenario is concerned, Ultrablue can shove both of them where the sun never shines because that is where they belong hand in hand.

You live in a bankrupt sh@@hole pretending to be American. Don't forget it.

I don't think they should be given jail sentences or fined for that matter.

That is wrong.

That is just plain wrong period.

No Sirrrrreeeeeeee Bob!

I personally endorse execution by a firing squad. You know, an eye for an eye. That is more like it. This would definitely send a message to wannabe perps, kinda like a shape-up or ship-the-shit-out.

Yeah.

Now, that's what I call justice! Besides, it would make a lot of Sharia lobbyists happy.

Oh no you won't, UB. Having a UAE passport won't give you any more rights than us lumpen foreigners that you so disdain. You can't change your government, impact legislation in any way or even freely speak your mind. All you can do is spitefully set up a foreigner to have a short holiday in Al Slammer before being deported on some charge of "immorality" (and lectures on decency and morality from an apologist for the behaviour of these spoiled delinquents are worth as much as the IOUs Nakheel is handing our to creditors).

If YOU cross somebody with the wrong name or the right wasta, you will suffer a fate even more arbitrary and unfair than that which might await us foreigners. At least we have governments to act, however pathetically, on our behalf.

Who do you have to stand up for you? The FNC??? Good luck with that....

It is because of rulings like this and the opinions like that of Ultra Blue that I am glad to be getting out of this place very soon. I only hope that more expats do the same.

Wonder what the punishment would have been if the two culprits weren't Emiratis (I'm assuming they were?). And if they'd killed an Emirati with their reckless actions.

Seriously though, there's something incredibly wrong with a culture that sees affection as something punishable and killing as not that bad.

And of course the age of 'legal accountability' is so high in the UAE - show me an Emirati who doesn't stay at home until he's 30, with his mum doing everything for him while he spends the evening buggering his brothers, and you'll be showing me an empty space.

May the poor victim's soul rest in peace.

I know it doesn't sound like much, but if the two don't get justice in this life, they certainly will in the next.

Doug, the reports said all three were Emiratis. The victim was 33.

Ha!

isn't it hilarious that despite your precious passport/citizenship, you can't do much either?

all you can do is kiss ass hard enough at a majlis and hope someone pities you enough to take notice....yaaaa if thats what you call power in the uae - no thanks.

back on topic:

the little s**** should have been executed or at the very least castrated. simple enough. snip snip and all is well.

but as they're not legally accountable, they should be banned from driving forever. im assuming if they can enjoy the priviliges of a license then they can also enjoy its ramifications.

see if they like hitting on girls/guys from their pathetic taxis.

but seeing as this the uae, land of the lawless and immoral....the said 'youths' will be in mariah mall before the week is over and have their pocket money confiscated for 1.9 seconds.

tsk tsk!

Seabee, thanks for clarifying.

Much as I'd hate to reinforce the ludicrous "everything depends on your race in the UAE" mentality, do you think that the sentence would have been stricter if the criminals had been two Indians (or Brits, for that matter)?

At the risk of flaring up more tensions, wasn't there some British woman driving on SZR at 100kph who hit and killed a jaywalker a while back? Wasn't she being threatened with 5 years in Al Watba and $200,000 diya - despite the fact the law of Dubai says if a pedestrian crosses a road with a limit greater than 80kph, the driver is excused from fault?

As ever, the law's inconsistently applied, thanks to good old-fashioned wasta.

I find it remarkable that you can console yourself with the notion they will suffer in a non-existent afterlife instead of paying for their actions today. It's all rather convenient, isn't it. Try telling that to the family of the deceased - "Don't worry, I'm sure they will suffer after they die". What a lot of nonsense.

For anonymous who posted on April 28 at 527 pm, ultrablue may be stupid, but you sir are a racist for inferring that ultrablue is an ass-licking indian teaboy.

If you can identify the poster's nationality, profession and character by the drivel he wrote, you should probably be in the US President's secret service. But wait, you are a racist - so probably won't get that job.
