Aboriginal humour

Ploughing through the hundreds of photos we took on our three weeks away and I'll post a few on here as I get them sorted out if I think they might be of interest.

Here are some of our home town, a small seaside town on the New South Wales Central Coast, an hour from the centre of Sydney.

We have a typically beautiful Aussie beach and as it's a weekend getaway for Sydneysiders we have hotels, motels, shops, nearly forty restaurants and cafes all within about a square kilometre which is the town centre. The tourists are a bloody nuisance but without them we wouldn't have all the facilities we enjoy so we put up with them.

The name of the town is Terrigal, a word from the local Aboriginal language which translates as 'place of little birds', which I've always thought must be a tongue in cheek name, an example of Aboriginal humour.

Here's why - two pics we took last week of birds which flourish in the town. A bush turkey wandering around the street leading up to our house and pelicans on the beach:

Place of very big birds would be more accurate.

By the way, that's our house up on the hill overlooking the town and the bay...
It's a pretty good view from our balcony...

What a fabulous view! I have visited Sydney in 2003: have a friend there. I've seen Balmain, Cremorne Point, Manly, Taronga etc. The mangroves/ greenery, low houses and the view of the open sea are really invigorating. No wonder they call it the world's most beautiful capital. Lucky for Oz no one thought of 'beautifying' the pristine beachscape by lining it with ugly concrete monstrosities cluttered ghetto style and reaching up, up into the sky.

Yes, people do say that Sydney is a beautiful city but I disagree. The city itself is ugly with terrible architecture. What's beautiful is natural, the harbour and the undeveloped areas. The colours in the last photo are true, I haven't manipulated it, the clear sky and incredible blue sky and water are an important part of the beauty of Australia.
