Holescaping

What is it with this obsession in Dubai of digging holes?

Finish a project, lay the footpath, get the landscaping done, wait until it all settles down, the grass is green, the flowers are in bloom – then surround it with plastic cones, plastic netting and dig it all up. Add piles of sand to the red and white plastic eyesore already in place to make it look really, really ugly – then go away and leave it.

Why?

I think a lot of people you speak either has holescaping or is recovering from it. In my opinion (at least) it appears that the relevant contractor determined that it just wasn't fair to just deface one neighbourhood with monstrosity therefore in the spirit of fairness and sharing they dug a big hole in every street. They then employ large numbers of labourers to stand next to it all day not actually doing anything but just to ensure it doesn't wander off thereby protecting their investment.
It does seem a shame though to go through all of the effort to make an area look nice to then deface it and whilst they do make some attempt to return it to it’s former glory after the work has been completed it is ever finished quite as well.
It is nice to dream of the day when there is one central planning department that all of infrastructure contractors report into. This org would then co-ordinate to ensure that when a hole is dug for the first time or the development is initially built that all the relevant services are on site over a period of a couple of days, they all do whatever they need to do at the same time and then close the hole… Maybe I oversimplify it but it doesn’t strike me as that difficult in principle, however managing it would be whole different ball game… Who knows, maybe one day…

Re above. I really should proof read before posting. Please forgive the grammatical errors, appalling sentence structure and atrocious spelling…
