Three months for beach romp

Inevitably the British tabloids' hysteria about Vince and Michelle facing six years in Al Slammer were just a little over the top.

They were charged with engaging in sexual activity in public, committing an indecent gesture in public and consuming alcohol. And they've been given three months jail, a fine of Dh1,000 and deportation.

Their lawyer says he will appeal.

The story is here.

im sure they're not the only ones
but it sort of became symbolic, hence the harsh outcome

Appeal. Sure. It'll take three months.

What about this story? Unless there's something more to it, it appears as if some airport official doesn't have the cojones to accept an apology, nor to be a man and not be offended in the first place.

NZM, there may be more to it of course, but it's another example of the strange (to me) fact that insulting someone is a very serious crime that can lead to more jail time than a physical assault.

"It’s not like she fell off the turnip truck," said her mom. "It’s not her first time out of the country. It’s certainly not her first time in Muslim countries."

Yeh, right, and thats why she was out in public after drinking alcohol. Duhhhhhh
I think he was offended to have to smell her breath more than anything else.

While I can understand the officer being offended, what I never understand, is that running over someone at a zebra crossing or not paying salaries or endangering peoples lives (if you have the right connections)is often seen as less of a crime than "offending" someone verbally...........

Dubai wants the labor + technology + skills + money of foreigners, yet remains inflexible to the lifestyles of foreigners.
This is not to say that foreigners musn't abide by local rules, but come on, a little fondling on the beach....do you really get a jail sentence for that anywhere else in the world????

Anon, drunk & disorderly, indecent public behaviour - yes, many places in the world have laws against such things and they can lead to jail time.
