Double standards

Dr (Condoleezza)Rice said: “This is not 1968 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia, where Russia can threaten its neighbours, occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it. Things have changed.”

So a large country can't occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it.

Unless the country is BushW's good ol' US of A, Doctor Rice?

Dr. Rice says:

The key word is "neighbor". Iraq isn't a neighbor to the US of A.

Abid, you're surely not suggesting that it's OK to invade a country as long as it isn't a neighbour?

But in any case, what about the neighbouring countries that the US has invaded?

Funniest thing that I read for a while was when Rice was recently in Auckland, and the Auckland University Students Association offered a $5000 reward for any student who managed to make a citizen's arrest of Rice for war crimes.

They withdrew the reward when the police intervened!

Scoop report and The AGe report.

NZM, it would be unfair to arrest poor Condi for it, she's floundering about completely out of her depth with very little idea what she's doing.

Obama beat you to the punch -- saying we (USA) need to "set an example" for the Russians, obviously equating Iraq with Georgia. I can't even begin to differentiate the differences between the two situations, but let's see ... the Russians initially demanded the removal of a democratically elected Georgian president as a cease fire condition. And it's not like Georgia was in violation of over a dozen UN resolutions like Iraq or had most governments believing that it had WMD, including Biden (Obama's running mate). But yes, let's leave things be in the name of peace. Vichy France had a nice government after all -- why'd we bother barging in there?
Iraq may not have merited invasion based on what we know now, but in today's world it's better to err on the side of preventing a worse disaster. I shudder to think what will happen to Pakistan's nukes, with Osama & Co. just down the road.
(By the way, I'm a former Dubai resident from 77-80 and 83-84 and like your page, anti-"ugly American" rhetoric notwithstanding!)
